One of the youngest and most famous drummer-boys in the American Civil War is nine-year-old John Clem (bottom left). When a Confederate soldier tries to take him prisoner, he picks up a musket and shoots the angry soldier. Clem is the youngest soldier to ever serve in the Union army. Later, he becomes the youngest noncommissioned officer in army history and eventually retires from the United States military as a Brigadier General.
